How a CSA works

A CSA, or community supported agriculture, is a membership in a local farm. You pay once before the season starts, and the farm gives you a share of the harvest every week while it grows. You are buying a whole season of food straight from the people who raise it, and the farm gets the up-front income it needs to plan and plant.

Because you sign on at the start, you share a little in the farm's year. A cool spring brings more greens early, a hot summer brings tomatoes and peppers in waves. That honest connection to how a farm actually grows is a big reason members come back year after year.

What is in the box, and when

Most vegetable shares run from late spring into the fall, roughly June through October, and some farms add a winter share of storage crops like squash, potatoes and onions. Early boxes lean on greens, radishes and herbs. Midsummer fills with tomatoes, corn, beans and cucumbers. Fall turns to root vegetables, winter squash and hardy greens.

Many farms go beyond vegetables with add-on shares for eggs, meat, fruit, flowers or bread, so a single weekly pickup can cover most of your table with local food.

Choosing the right CSA

Start with share size. A full share feeds a family that cooks most nights, while a half share or an every-other-week box suits a couple or a lighter cook. Then look at pickup: some farms have on-farm or farmers market pickup, while others deliver to your neighborhood or your door.

Ask whether the share is a set box or customizable. Set boxes are simplest and usually cheapest, while market-style CSAs let you swap out what you will not use. Use the map above to find CSA farms near you, then open a farm's page for share options and sign-up details.

How does a CSA work?

You buy a share from a local farm before the season starts, and in return you get a box of fresh food every week through the harvest, usually vegetables, and often fruit, eggs, meat or flowers too. You share in the bounty, and the farm gets steady income to plan the year.

How much does a CSA cost?

A full season vegetable share commonly runs $400 to $700, which usually works out to $20 to $35 a week for far more and fresher food than the same money buys at the store. Many farms offer half shares, payment plans, and pickup or home delivery.
