What is ready, and when

Pick your own follows the seasons. Strawberries come first, in late May and June. Blueberries, cherries and raspberries carry through the summer. Then the big fall season arrives with apples and pumpkins from September through October, and choose-and-cut Christmas trees close out the year. Flowers and herbs are pickable most of the warm season.

Timing shifts by region and by the weather in any given year, so always check the farm's website or call ahead before you drive out. A late frost or a hot stretch can move a season by a week or two.

Tips for a good u-pick trip

Go on a weekday morning if you can, for the best picking and the smallest crowds. Wear closed shoes, bring sun protection, and leave the field as you found it. Most farms hand you containers and charge by the pound or the bag, so bring a little cash in case the stand does not take cards.

Pick only what is ripe, ripe fruit comes off the plant easily, and taste as you go. Freeze extra berries flat on a tray so they do not clump, and you will have local fruit all winter.
