Pick Your Own Farms
Nothing beats fruit you picked an hour ago. U-pick farms open their fields and orchards so you can harvest at peak ripeness and pay by the pound.
How u-pick works
You check in at the farm stand, grab containers, and head to whichever rows the farm has opened that day. Pick what you want, weigh it on the way out, and pay by the pound or by the container. Farms rotate open sections so the fruit stays plentiful, so always follow the signs and pick where they send you.
Ripeness rules of thumb: strawberries and blueberries should come off the stem with almost no pull. Apples should snap off with a twist, not a yank. Taste as you decide, not as you graze; farms notice the difference.
Find picking farms near you
Use the farms near me map and filter for Pick Your Own, or browse your state and town pages. Every listing shows the address and website, and picking farms almost always post field conditions and what is ripe this week on their site before you make the drive.
Picking season questions
When is strawberry picking season?
Roughly late May through June in most of the country, earlier in the South and California, later in northern New England and the upper Midwest. Seasons run two to four weeks, so check the farm’s website or call before you drive.
When is apple picking season?
Late August through October for most orchards, with early varieties like Ginger Gold first and keepers like Fuji and Pink Lady closing the season. Columbus Day weekend is peak crowds; weekday mornings are the quiet secret.
Is pick your own cheaper than the store?
Usually for berries, often about even for apples. You are paying for the experience as much as the food. The real savings come from picking in bulk and freezing, canning, or making pie filling.
What should I bring to a u-pick farm?
Closed shoes you can get dirty, sun protection, water, and cash as a backup. Most farms provide containers, but call ahead. Leave pets home unless the farm says otherwise.
